In this webquest you are to pretend that you have just been hired as a Web designer who earns $45,000 per year. Your monthly take-home pay is $2,500. This is the amount you receive after taxes and all other deductions, such as your company's co-pay health care plan.

You are to create a monthly budget that shows all your incoming and outgoing money. You must figure out how to survive without obtaining credit card debt or borrowing from your parents.

Required Expenses

  1. You need to purchase a car to get you to your job each day.
  2. If you plan to attend college you need to research how much money you will have in student loans. Assume that you will not receive any financial aid or scholarships.
  3. You can not live with your parents or anyone else and need to find a place to live.
  4. You cannot share a cell phone plan with anyone.

All expenses listed below must be accounted for in your budget calculation. Your budget should be organized in fixed and discretionary expenses.

Fixed Expenses

  • Mortgage or Rent
  • Homeowner's or Renter's Insurance
  • Car Payment
  • Car Insurance
  • Health Insurance
  • Student Loan Payment
  • Savings (All left over money will be put in savings.)


Discretionary Expenses

  • Gas
  • Electricity
  • Water & Sewer
  • Cable TV
  • Phone
  • Cell Phone
  • Internet
  • Food/Household Items
  • Entertainment
  • Dining Out
  • Gas for Car
  • Service expense for Car
  • Clothing
  • Gifts
  • Any other discretionay expense that you may need.
